(S19E11) Oh my. Evil Russell from Survivor looks like some sort of deranged Buddha gone bad in this screen capture from tonight's episode. Tonight, like every Thanksgiving episode, was the clips show boasting previously unseen footage. It's not surprising that they do this each year. With the format of the show, they can't run a real repeat. And, if they were to air a new episode on the holiday, many folks would end up missing it. I'm usually disappointed with the footage shown, but tonight we did have a few surprises and interesting bits -- nothing earth-shattering, mind you.
Continue reading Review: Survivor Samoa - The First 27 Days

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Nip/Tuck - Alexis Stone II

Filed under: OpEd, Nip/Tuck, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S06E07) "That's why we need to play dirty." - Sean

Gotta give credit where credit is due -- despite the fact that Teddy's story was so poorly wrapped up, Ryan Murphy and Co. crafted a helluva one-two punch to make us forget about it. Just substitute Christine for Hank, and then flip over to The Middle and ABC for the rest of the night. What a satisfying night of laughs.

There was no Thanksgiving trimmings for Christine this year; instead it was date night. And while the episode did fall victim to some predictable set-ups, it was still a lot of fun to watch. I particularly liked the twists and turns of Barb's date with Dave. She dragged Christine along to make sure Dave didn't propose to her.

Meanwhile, now that New Christine is pregnant, Richard is ready to woo her as well. But he needn't worry about cleaning up or even trying. Just get her into bed: that's where he really shines.
Continue reading Review: The New Adventures of Old Christine - I Love Woo, I Hate Woo

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Middle - Thanksgiving

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
(S01E09) While I'm not ready to declare that The Middle is a superior sitcom to Modern Family, if this episode is any indication, I'm ready to say that it's every bit as good. And funny! Man, was this a brilliant holiday episode. I don't know how Thanksgivings go at your house, but ours have gone very much like this one at times. With everyone busy, and family members having to work because they have terrible bosses.

I swear, it's like these writers haven't set this in Indiana, but rather in my own Midwestern backyard. And while things were traditionally set up, as we'd expect, for the traditional "sweet comedy" outcomes, The Middle turned some of those conventions on their head.

They also showed us a new way to cook a turkey, though I'm not really sure if it would work all that well. And there's nothing wrong with Axl loving the can-shaped cranberry sauce. That's my favorite, too! Just slice it up and you're good to go.
Continue reading Review: The Middle - Thanksgiving

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Cougar Town - Here Comes My Girl

Filed under: Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Cougar Town
(S01E09) Two things I'm starting to realize about Cougar Town:

1) The more the show concentrates on the ensemble and less on Jules, the funnier it is, and

2) We really need to see more interaction between Courteney Cox and Dan Byrd.

This episode had essentially the same formula as the barbecue episode from a few weeks ago: bring everyone together under Jules' roof and let them bounce off one another. And it worked once again. Instead of a barbecue, of course, the occasion was Thanksgiving (in Florida can you have a barbecue three weeks before Thanksgiving). There's only one slight, itty-bitty problem with what went on this week. But it's a problem that I hope leads to some good things.
Continue reading Review: Cougar Town - Here Comes My Girl

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Modern Family - Fizbo

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Modern Family

(S01E09) You've gotta love the use of the dramatic flashback to lead us into the saga of Luke's birthday party. Not only was the affectation utilized well, it again showcased the love and support at the heart of this family saga. Opening us at the hospital the way they did also nicely gave the whole episode that feeling of inevitable dread.

At the same time, they smartly kept the number of people involved in the hospital conversations very small at first so that we would have no choice but to speculate which member of the cast would wind up there, and via what means.

Then, they just sat back and let events unfold as Phil and Claire put together one of the coolest -- and lamest -- parties in the history of television. And still they found a way to let everyone shine for at least a scene or two.
Continue reading Review: Modern Family - Fizbo

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Eastwick - Paint and Pleasure

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
(S01E08) "I am through with tortured relationships and unrequited crushes." - Joanna

Even though Eastwick has gotten the big ol' axe, I'll cover it til the bitter end, gosh darnit. I believe it has one more episode, which airs next week.

At this point, it seems kind of silly to invest more emotional energy into the show, but even though it's had some trouble finding its footing, Eastwick has gotten consistently more interesting. In particular, I was looking forward to seeing where the romance and lust between Darryl and Roxie would go. It got a little more heated this week, and there's plenty of sparks there.

The crush Joanna had on Will seems to have all but vanished, and she seems cool with Kat going out with him. Kat, on the other hand, isn't quite sure what she's doing. When she saw Ray making out with another woman, her furor stirred things up and sent a piano, among other things, flying.
Continue reading Review: Eastwick - Paint and Pleasure

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: So You Think You Can Dance - 2 of 12 Voted Off

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, So You Think You Can Dance
(S06E18) I'm surprised how well So You Think You Can Dance can cover up the fact that the first 30 minutes can be wasted in just finding out who the bottom three were. It felt like the two-couples-at-a-time technique worked better than having three couples up at one time. One thing I'm happy to see in the recaps are the slo-mo camera angles. Sure, the show could be completed in 30 minutes, but at least they filled the time with a strong group performance, ballet, and Shakira.
Continue reading Review: So You Think You Can Dance - 2 of 12 Voted Off

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Glee - Hairography

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Glee

(S01E11) Distractions abounded in this latest episode of Glee. Most of the characters were causing distraction or being distracted from the situation at hand, and we were back to most of the soapy aspects of the show. Teri and Quinn were both thinking about the baby, and Will and Finn remained as in the dark as ever. More on that and other complications after the jump.
Continue reading Review: Glee - Hairography

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Sons of Anarchy - Culling

Filed under: Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Sons of Anarchy

(S02E12) "Either you or me goes home in a bag." - Jax to A.J.

The showdown we've been waiting all season to see finally happened tonight and even though it didn't end the way the antagonists deserved (i.e. heads removed where the shoulder meets the neck, placed on a stick and paraded around town on a substandard Japanese import), it still had my head spinning.

The show opens with SAMCRO preparing for their big, inevitable smackdown with the League by keeping all of their loved ones under lock and key at the clubhouse. But instead of just jumping into the fray head first with baseball bats twisted in barb-wire and all, they do what they should have done from the beginning: they plotted and planned. They turned the tables on the League and by doing so, turned the League on each other.
Continue reading Review: Sons of Anarchy - Culling

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: V - It's Only the Beginning

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, V
(S01E04) Well, that's it until March 2010. The most important thing that V could do this week was to leave us hanging on the edge of our seats as to what's coming next. If the idea was to give us a sense of sheer hopelessness in the face of the power of the Visitors, then that's what we did.

More importantly, we got to see the genesis of the Resistance movement led by Jack, Ryan and Erica. It makes an even more powerful figure when you consider that at this point there are exactly four people -- at least that we're following -- taking on 29 Visitor ships with technology and power almost beyond our imagining.

Everyone loves a scrappy underdog, and you couldn't ask for much more than that. But it was great seeing them take some of their first strikes against the Visitors as a unit. This is the struggle, against near impossible odds, that will keep us glued to our seats.
Continue reading Review: V - It's Only the Beginning

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 12 Perform

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, So You Think You Can Dance

(S06E17) This week determines the top ten of So You Think You Can Dance. We welcome the top twelve dancers and judging by the audience, Legacy and Jakob are the most loved. With Dancing with the Stars ending this week, I'm happy that I can devote more time to this show because the dancing is a higher caliber and it isn't just a celebrity popularity contest.

Tonight we got to see the first Can Can and the return of the Lindy Hop. I am happy that the show continues to break the boundaries of dance and shine a light on new choreographers.
Continue reading Review: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 12 Perform

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Biggest Loser - Week Eleven

Filed under: OpEd, The Biggest Loser, Episode Reviews
(S08E11) It was a big week, as the remaining five contestants settled in for their final week on the Biggest Loser campus. With Amanda as a clear outcast in the group, she was feeling the pressure even more to stay above that yellow line. And big weeks aren't something Amanda is known for, despite a valiant nine-pound loss last week. She's never seen double digits and spent most of the season hovering around six pounds a week.

However, as one of the smallest contestants in the game, those numbers can make a difference when it comes to her percentages. Liz, Allen, Rudy and Danny have all developed a tight bond over the past ten weeks, and you just know their dream was for Amanda to slip below so they could send her home and preserve their foursome into the Semi-Finals.

The week was big in a couple of other ways as well. Rudy with the potential to have the biggest on-campus weight loss in Biggest Loser history, while Danny was in position to break a record of his own.
Continue reading Review: The Biggest Loser - Week Eleven

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Dancing with the Stars - Performance 10 Results (season finale)

Filed under: OpEd, Dancing With The Stars, Episode Reviews

We re-welcome the thirteen eliminated celebrities. Donny & Kym, Mya & Dmitry, and Kelly & Louis emerge from the other side of the stage and run past the eliminated contestants. Louis got a lot of butt slaps; he giggles and continues walking.

We get a recap of last night, ad in the middle of the recap we have the back of Miss Piggy's head. Was that the spaghetti cat of DWTS? The recap played again right after a commercial break.

The best part of the night wasn't the results, it was Miss Piggy laying the smackdown on Samantha Harris.
Continue reading Review: Dancing with the Stars - Performance 10 Results (season finale)

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: NCIS - Child's Play

Filed under: OpEd, NCIS, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S07E09) If you want to show the soft side of Jethro Gibbs, involve a kid. That would seem to be the logic behind this episode which was a bit of a reach, what with cornfields, a think tank for gifted children, government secrets, a tenuous link to gang activity, a dead Marine, and pink cupcakes ... but still interesting.

There was also the whole connection to Thanksgiving at Ducky's. Would our favorite NCIS team make it to dinner together or would they be setting out on separate paths? Would Abby master the cranberry sauce? (S02E08) "You believe in Santa Claus?" - Lightman

Ho Ho Ho... you're going to Afghanistan. Not exactly a Christmas present to be happy about. Having said that, Cal must surely be happy about what he accomplished in last night's episode of Lie to Me.
Sent to a US Marines outpost in the middle of the desert near Kabul, Cal was tasked with uncovering the truth about a deep-cover US operative who got left for dead and had to join to Taliban to survive. Cal was able to get plenty of info from his subject about two missing Marines but we ended up learning far more about Dr. Lightman as a result of his methods.
Continue reading Review: Lie to Me - Secret Santa

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Castle - One Man's Treasure

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Castle
<img hspace="4" height="329" border="0" align="right" width="200" vspace="4" alt="Molly C.
Molly C. Quinn is such a cutie. I loved the storyline this week where she volunteers to categorize evidence, and in doing so, uses her skills to help return someone's precious "brag book" to them. She takes after her dad in the "big heart" department.

Castle is good about that. They could have made Richard Castle as a roguish playboy who chases women and loves a good time, and while he's got some of that in him (see above quote), he's also a dedicated family man. The writers are good about the characters that way. Beckett is a hard-nosed detective, but she's also good with people, excelling at giving them bad news in such a way as to soften the blow.
Continue reading Review: Castle - One Man's Treasure

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: The Big Bang Theory - The Vengence Formulation

Filed under: Battlestar Galactica, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, The Big Bang Theory

(S03E09) As soon as I read the episode info and saw that Kripke was going to be making an appearance, I lost all hope of this episode coming anywhere close to matching the brilliance of last week's. I was not wrong. I don't like Kripke. I don't find a speech impediment to be funny, and with him, it's completely extraneous. Sheldon could just have an enemy (I don't doubt he had many, in fact). You don't need to give the character this extra identifying mark.

So not only was I dismayed by Kripke's appearance, his practical joke was just mean-spirited and again, not something that I found funny. I don't like watching people getting humiliated. Sheldon dressed up for a radio interview. That's adorable, and then to not only be embarrassed for absolutely no reason in front of a national audience, but to have his friends laughing at him as well, just made me sad. Luckily, Wolowitz's uh, love triangle with Bernadette and Katee Sackhoff saved the episode for me.
Continue reading Review: The Big Bang Theory - The Vengence Formulation

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: House - Ignorance is Bliss

Filed under: OpEd, House, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S06E09) "There's no point in putting a band together if we're not going to play any gigs." - House

I'm torn over the best way to tackle this review of "Ignorance is Bliss." I have far more bad things to say about the episode than I do good things, yet I loved it. The outcome I (and presumably most other fans) want to see (House and Cuddy together) is hopefully going to be achieved. This just isn't my ideal path to get there.
Continue reading Review: House - Ignorance is Bliss

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Heroes - Thanksgiving

Filed under: Heroes, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S04E11) I am thankful that we are finally getting to the meat of this volume. I am thankful that we are inching closer to the inevitable conclusion of this battle between Sylar and Nathan over who will retain control of the body. And I am thankful that Angela Petrelli, the always incomparable Cristine Rose, was back this week.

Also making a return appearance for the Bennett family Thanksgiving dinner was Sandra, along with her new beau Doug. And, of course, Mr. Muggles. It's sweet that Muggs fell in love with Doug's dog, but that doesn't excuse Sandra for dating such a total tool. It's a little awkward to think of going to your ex's holiday, but it's not unheard of. Particularly since she probably already knew Claire was going to be there.

Not to be outdone, Samuel had a Thanksgiving dinner of his own back at the Carnival, but Hiro certainly wasn't thankful to be there.
Continue reading Review: Heroes - Thanksgiving

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
